Title: Non-perturbative gauge-fixing on the lattice
Abstract : The usual Wilsonian approach to lattice gauge theory is manifestly gauge-invariant and well-defined without any gauge-fixing. Nevertheless, there arise situations, for example in the formulation of manifestly local lattice chiral gauge theories, where one needs to control the longitudinal gauge degrees of freedom via gauge-fixing. The study of gauge-fixing on the lattice as an alternate formulation of lattice gauge theories is also interesting in its own. Trying to gauge-fix on the lattice with compact gauge fields in the Fadeev-Popov prescription with resulting BRST symmetry, however, fails due to a no-go theorem. In this talk, I will discuss two gauge-fixing proposals for Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories which evade the no-go theorem. I will present results from our simulations in the gauge-fixed pure U(1) theory and some preliminary results from gauge-fixing in a pure SU(2) theory.
