Title: Jarzynski's equality in lattice gauge theories
Abstract: Jarzynski's equality is a well-known result in statistical mechanics that relates the free energy difference between two equilibrium states with the fluctuations of the work performed during non-equilibrium transformations from one state to the other. In the framework of Monte Carlo simulations this relation provides a simple and efficient technique to compute directly differences in free-energy and it can be readily extended to lattice gauge theories in order to calculate physically interesting observables in strongly-coupled gauge theories. I will present recent studies carried out with this method, with focus on the thermodynamics of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Finally, I will discuss further potential applications of this equality for the SchrÃ¶dinger Functional scheme and for the study of QCD in an external magnetic field.
